Jelly, jam, preserves, compote, marmalade, chutney, WTF?

I’ve wondered for years and finally looked it up. Here’s the cheat sheet.

  • Jelly: fruit juice and sugar
  • Jam: pureed fruit and sugar
  • Preserves: fruit chunks and sugar
  • Marmalade: preserves made with citrus fruit
  • Compote: preserves but eaten fresh instead of preserved
  • Chutney: jam but with vinegar and spices
