Here’s what you want:
- Lots of fiber. Aim for a 5 to 1 ratio of of carbs to grams of fiber, or better.
- Low sugar. Aim for less than two grams of added sugar per slice.
- Whole grain. Make sure the word “whole” exists in the first ingredient.
- And no ingredients you’ve never heard of, if possible
Also: that “freshly baked” bread in the bakery section of your grocery store was probably partially baked and frozen a long time ago.
