Answer: flag it before it feels necessary, or important, or even worth your time and energy. Because it’s never too early to flag performance issues, but it’s often too late.
If there’s even a whiff of underperformance, flag that junk. I don’t care how how minor it is. I don’t care that it only happened once. Mention it. Intense intervention or acceptance.
Why? Because flagging the small things now…
- …prevents them from becoming big things later
- …makes it less uncomfortable when you eventually do need to flag something bigger
- …creates a culture of radical candor, which means more feedback for you too
- …makes it so that nobody has to guess or worry about what you’re thinking about them
