Preventing bad things vs. creating good things

My hypothesis is that a common career path goes in a bell shape like this:

  • Engineer: mostly creating good things (build it and ship it, baby!)
  • Tech lead: half and half
  • Manager: mostly preventing bad things
  • Director: half and half
  • Senior leader: mostly creating good things (vision, strategy, inspiration, etc.)

Which do you spend more time doing? Which do you enjoy more?
