Senior+ employees aren’t allowed to miss things

Once you get to senior and beyond, “not missing things” is a part of the job. Examples could be:

  • An @mention in an issue or a pull request
  • An async team discussion in a doc somewhere
  • A message in your team’s channel in whatever chat app you use

Missing those things is not OK once you get past junior levels. You’re not allowed to keep saying “sorry, I didn’t see that.” People should never have to bump a thread you never responded to, or DM you a link to a discussion you missed.

So if you find yourself not seeing things you should be seeing, it’s your job to fix that. Set up the right notifications or email filters or chat integrations or recurring reminders or whatever. Write an app that pokes you in the eyeball if you have to.

(Or maybe change your team’s async culture to make it easier, such as asking people to not post important things in chat.)
