Another lesson from re-reading The Coaching Habit is TERA – Tribe, Expectations, Rank, Autonomy. If someone is lacking safety then it can probably be tracked back to one of those.
- Tribe: Do they feel included? Is there a sense of belonging? Or do they feel like an outsider?
- Focus on: increasing belonging cues.
- Expectation: Do they know what’s coming? Or are they unsure and anxious about it?
- Focus on: being super duper clear about the future.
- Rank: Does your rank make them feel “less than”? Is there a scary power dynamic at play?
- Focus on: highlighting confidentiality and declaring a safe space.
- Autonomy: Are they a player or a pawn? Do they have control, or get a say?
- Focus on: making them feel heard and taken seriously, but be honest about their level of input.
